Abstract

The Santa Cruz la Real Monastery, together with that of San Jerónimo is one of the most significant examples of monastics architecture to be found in Granada. Both were founded buy the Catholic Kings and were supported by their successors and by the town, and the Santa Cruz Monastery fonns an integral part of one of the most distinguished quarters of the city.
The present building, which is no longer complete, thanks to the alineations of the 19th century, requires a carefully documented study in depth. It is made up of the church, the large monastic cloister, and the great imperial staircase. This last feature -built at the end of the 16th century en record time by artists so far unknown- is analyzed in the present article, since it is the first of its kind its roof presents us with a complex iconographic theme.
