Abstract

The great altarpiece of the Royal Chapel is analysed formally, (though iconographic considerations are not totally excluded) as a clearly defined and powerful piece of architecture. It has rigorous casements but there are also a great number of sacred figures present which break the "rules" for this type of architecture, thus lending the present example a new vitality. We emphasize the ambiguous place occupied by the figures in the position of praying -the Catholic Kings- who are both within and outside the altarpiece and do not in any case take part as actors in this sacred play.
