Abstract

The art of ivory-working in Spain has a long tradition in the provinces of Granada and Jaén, and the latest evidence can be seen in the artisans working in marquetry who still flourish to this day. However, a most significan! aspect is the creation of a great amount of "ivory crosses" - we have elsewhere shown and discussed the wide-ranging catalogue of these works. The importance of the present paper is that is describes 2 1 examples, clearly located and catalogued, with the aim of encouraging deeper knowledge of the tradition ivory sculpture in these provinces and to pro vide criteria for its characterisation.
