Abstract

In order to understand the specific characteristics of Malaga, within the general concept of a bourgeois town of the 19th century, it is not sufficient to investigate certain large-scale public works (particularly regarding the road system), which seem to have occupied researchers up to the present time. We also have to study the creation of a main industrial -working-class quarter, another area of a residential nature. and the conversion of the traditional town centre - which had previously been devoted to municipal and national administrative offices and religious centres- into a residential and commercial zone. This had important consequences for town architecture and building in general.
