Abstract

The series of archangels in the Santa Clara convent of Loja are considered in a wider iconographic context, which covers the whole church, and deals with the Counter-Reformation concept of the Virgin Mary in the last third of the 17th century. The Cieza brothers, José and Vicente, have created a striking work of art within the Granada tradition of al fresco painting in their placement of these archangels, which are not frequently found in Spanish 17th century iconography, and in the connection which they establish with the other works which frame them.
