Abstract

"White" carpentry ("carpintería de lo Blanco") in New Spain changed substantially from the first forms imported from Spain. This development was due to different types of wood available, the lack of master builders and carpenters and the search for aesthetic forms and solutions which truly retlected the cultural reality of each geographical area.
The result was the creation of spaces where important iconographic themes were developed, and important technical solutions found, which imitated those achieved in stone or masonry.
