Abstract

In post-war Spain, and within a doctrinaire cultural climate totally opposed to any form of avante-guardism, there arose a generalized feeling in aesthetics of opposition to artistic purity, to technique, to the machine and to positivist theories in general. Over and against these an exaggerated view of human and spiritual values was proposed.
This view is seen in what was to become one of the most importan! points of the artistic discourse of these years: the debate on the «dehumanizing» and «rehumanizing» of art, which had already made its appearance in theoretical artistic discussions in the pre-war years.
