Abstract

The aim of this paper is to bring to light sorne hitherto unknown documents relating to a contract to make five statued images. This contrae! was made in 1 626 between the Procurator of the Jesuit Novitiate of St. Ignatius at Baeza and the Jaén sculptor Sebastián de Solís. The works detailed in the contract -a crucifix, with St. John, the «Virgen de los Dolores», and St. Peter and St. Paul- which were to form part of the high altarpiece in the Novitiate church, were lost in the last century. However, they are still of interest, since they give evidence of the last creative years of the best sculptor in the Kingdom of Jaén, which take place within the transition from Mannerism to Baroque.
