Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to present an argument in favour of a unitary view of musicology which will overcome artificial frontiers between disciplines. The author undertakes a critica! examination of the dichotomy between oral and written traditions (and its expression in ethnomusicology and in the history of music), in order to propose that these should be brought together, leading to a re-theorization of musicology as the overall study of music.
