Abstract

The music which is performed during the Carnival festivities in the region of Alto Jujuy in the extreme NorthEast of Argentina belongs to local tradition. They reflect a complex interaction between sorne ofthe tonal systems used in this repertoire. Through the analysis of sorne musical examples, the author presents a classification of these according to the degree to which the pentatonic anhemitonal system influenced by Inca culture is «contaminated» by tonal forms coming from Europe.
