Abstract

20th century music has become a cultural phenomenon of surprising importance, brought about by the use of almost unlimited artistic inspiration and freedom. Perhaps the most important feature of this phenomenon is to be found in the emancipation of parameters of musical language hitherto considered fundamental, which has encouraged a liberated and informal type of music. This facet of liberalization is analyzed in the present paper from three points of view: musical intervals (emancipation of dissonance); use of colour and sound (emancipation
of timbre and tone); and musical syntax ( emancipation of form).
