Abstract

This paper analyses the situation of the Royal Chapel of Music in Madrid after the War of lndependence. The turbulent years of the reign of Fernando the 7th had an effect on the successive reforms which in turn influenced the musical life of this Chapel. Despite the monarch's expressed desire to maintain the services here with ali the pomp and ceremony of previous period, he was to allow the Royal Chapel -in contrast to the laxity prevalent in the cathedral chapels- to establish and keep up a large-sized orchestra and choir, independent of the social circumstances surrounding them.
