Abstract

Though the Baroque period was familiar with the «French» and «Italian» styles, it also seems possible that a «Spanish style» existed. We find it mentioned by many theorists, but we have always lacked detailed inforrnation. The music of the Harmonic Poem by Francisco Guerau (1694) gives evidence of some characteristics of this style (but without any textual explanation), such as: the harrnonic progression in the direction of the sub-dominant in the Pasacalles, the general aspect of the repertoire (made up entirely of variations), or the rejection of «modern» Italian techniques (for example, the campanelas). Ali these elements allow us to speak of an obviously «Spanish» style.
