Miguel de Irizar's correspondence and its contribution to the study of Spanish music and musicians of the 17th century

Abstract

The correspondence of the composer Irizar which is conserved in Segovia Cathedral runs to a total of 362 letters, which were received in the period from 1 663 to 1 684. Many are requests that lrízar compose pieces of music for a particular chapel, or are offers of an exchange of works by Galan, Patiño, etc. and sorne of these works composed the repertoire which the music masters took to America. There are also letters from musicians recommending pupils, or themselves, in which the writer extols the merits of the candidate, enumerating the instruments he can play as a continuo or praising his skill in composition and sight-reading.
