Abstract

The Spanish economy and Spanish politics had to react to new circumstances at the end of the decade of the 1950s, and this reaction was also to be reflected in society in general and in the fine arts. In the field of the arts, this change manifested itself in three episodes: the infomialist trend, the appearance of tendencies of committed
realism, and the no1mative art movement. These episodes fom1ed the basis of what was to be a very frnitful and complex theoretical debate in the following decade.
