Abstract

In the transition from the 18th to the 19th century the novel becomes the vehicle for the dissemination of new aesthetic ideas. The present articlc analyzes thc way in which 1l1t: novel by Goethe, Elective Affi111ties reflects contemporary enthusiasm for the landscaped garden, developed in England during the 18th century and connected with a new concept of the role of subjectivity in creativity and in artistic perception.
