Abstract

Patriarchal society has created a great variety of religions in which myths and legends serve to nurture social organization and cultural traditions. By considering two central enigmas which have intrigued mankind for
centuries - that of the origin of the world and of humanity - this paper offers sorne retlections on the role assigned to Woman in collective Western imagery. A deconstructive study of the meaning of such fi gures as Gaea (life/death), Pandara and Eve (knowledge), the Amazons and Lilith (freedom) and Mary (the Christian mirror image) is provided.
