Abstract

The 18th century saw the creation of a great number of altarpieces in Granada churches which reflect the social and religious changes of the epoch. The most importan! works are well-known, but there rema in to be studied a good number of altarpieces which illustrate the development of a genre whose style varied between late baroque and classical models, with sorne interesting variations. This paper offers an initial analysis of the topic, and is the introduction to a general and comprehensive discussion of the altarpieces of the town and province of Granada which will be developed in a monographic study soon to appear.
