Abstract

The study of the ornamental decoration of water pumps in Granada offers interesting information on a typology of works of art on which not much research has ben done. These monuments are however of great interest to the student of artistic and cultural developrnents in Granada. When ornamental designs are added to the functional structure of these pumps, we are able to analyze them in terms of the various aesthetic conventions
of different historical periods. The study reveals a clear predominance of secular over sacred motifs. Together with these, heraldic designs, pictorial reliefs and signs with inscriptions offer a rich decorative panorama of
high quality.
