Abstract

In Granada churches there are four paintings of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico, made in the 16 or 17th centuries. This remarkable fact provides evidence of the close contact maintained with the Viceroyalty of New Spain and raises a series of issues. Who brought these paintings to Spain, and why? In what style are they painted, and what is their iconography? What is their value as symbols? The answers to these questions will lead to our understanding of a very interesting process.
