Abstract

In this paper I consider certain theoretical problems that are linked to autobiographical writing based on the analysis of the autobiography of the Argentinean writer María Rosa Oli- ver (1898-1977). The author weaves a very specific identity for herself —as a feminist and an anti-fascist— through the very process of writing her memoirs. In particular, I analyze the way her stories about her struggle against both Spanish and German fascism intersect with those about her struggle against female subordination, these being the specific modes she used to enact a broader challenge against the hegemonic ideology that naturalizes both class and gender inequality. However, there are also limits to this resistance, which are connected to autobiographical writing itself.
