Saturnino Calleja (1853-1915) was an avid entrepreneur, publisher, author and director of a publishing house well known for producing the most significant collection of children’s literature in Spain to date. His production greatly contributed in shaping three generations of Spanish children. In the following pages, we will examine the author’s personality and the various challenges the publishing house overcame during his long career until its closure in the 1950s. The role of children’s stories and fairy tales targeted at girls will be dicussed while high litghing the uniqueness of the Calleja production.
