Abstract

The author offers a theoretical and historical examination of the concepts of class and class
formation from the perspective of gender. She analyzes the destabilization of the concept of class through its encounters with the concepts of gender, race and ethnicity, a result of the
growing interest of labor historians in culture and language. Her study of male and female
textile workers in Wilhelmine and Weimar Germany critizices the current models of class
formation and points to the difficulties of integrating gender into existing theoretical constructs.
