Abstract

This article focuses on the profile of Federica Montseny (1905-1994) as an anarchist,
feminist and minister during the Civil War. An emblematic figure in the context of Spanish
Politics and the labour movement, Montseny was outstanding moreover as a woman and an
anarchist because she was the first Spanish woman to hold a ministerial post in November 1936.
This study examines the paradox between her rejection of feminism and her life which transgressed
the traditional gender norms of Spanish society. The ambivalence of her attitude towards
feminism is studied in the light of her specific option as an anarchist. This study also centers
on the health and social policies she developed as minister of Heallh and Social Assistance
(1936-1937).
