Abstract

This article tries to highlight changes in women's devotion to religious life which took
place in Catalonia between the 9th and 11th centuries. These changes were constitutive of the
feudal gender system and its further development, a system which modified women's expectations
of controlling their life courses. The process of instauration of female monasticism is related to
previous non-institutional forms of women's devotion to religious life. Female monasticism is
seen as product of a social negociation between patriarchal interests and women's interests.
