Abstract

The condition of women in Spain as depicted by Concepción Arenal is the central theme of
this study. It is shown how this writer placed great importance on the role of women in the
social, economic and cultural realms of life. The preconceptions about women commonly held
in the Spanish society of that era, which tended to reproduce and reaffirm women's situation
of subordination, are also discussed. The vindication of basic instruction and education for
women in order to facilitate their access to the labor market appears as a key issue.
