Abstract

Based on the educational and labour situation of women in Madrid during the thirties, the
text analyzes the political and electoral participation of women as voters, propagandists and
candidates in the Madrid elections in the Second Republic, and it shows that the results of the
1933 election were not attributable to womens's electoral behaviour, but rather to a swing to
the right of the electorate as a whole, due to various political factors.
