Abstract

The present work focuses on the figures of the father from an anthropological and
comparative perspective. Through the analysis of several socially and culturally different
cases, I try to show that the construction of paternity is a diverse and complex process that
often is not centered on a unique figure. Elements such as sex or the capacity of generation
are not natural determinants of the paterno-filial relationship. The study concludes that
paternity can be defined as a two way process of construction of power relations that give
access to particular material and symbolic resources that are necessary in every society.
