Abstract

This article analises different slave markets in subsaharian Africa from a gender perspective, focusing on several main subjects: a) the sexual rate of slaves, b) the higher price of women slaves, c) the low fertility of women slaves, and d) the capacity of women slaves to work. The author studies and compares three types of societies: self-sustaining domestic societies, merchant societies and aristocratic ones.
