Abstract

Daughter of a rich merchant, the family of Maria Agnès Ribera Garau devised a plan to disinherit her and forced her to be a nun. At the cloister she acquired a wide intellectual knowledge. Thanks to the Decree regarding secularization she was allowed to leave the convent, but with the rise of absolutism she had to go into exile to France. She supported liberalism and fought the Church for 12 years in order to get her vows annulled. She defended her case before the Vatican Court and the Holy See granted her freedom. Henceforth, she devoted herself to writing and promoting the education for women.
