Abstract

This article offers a close-up on women graduates who started teaching at Spanish universities before the Spanish Civil War in 1936: Who these pioneers were, where they taught and how their professional itineraries developed. During this period, the access to the academic field was precarious, not only because of temporary teaching assignments, but also due to the difficulty that women encountered to promote within the university system. These procedures have characterized the incorporation of women professors in the university. Many of the women depicted in these pages have been driven towards other professional areas, specifically those areas where official government placement examinations were required, which granted a more objective access.
