Abstract

The analysis of both, the arising of a new creole identity in New Spain, and the discourse that was created there in order to defend local interests, has been undertaken from various perspectives but, until now, the important role played by women in this processes has not been duly considered. The aim of this paper is to highlight the need of placing women within all those matters that have been traditionally considered by historiography as key in the constitution of creole identity. Additionally, we will incorporate to our analysis a number of matters that have not been taken into account before and in which women also played an important role.
