Abstract

This article illustrates how Sephardic men questioned their wives whatever their condition: either tradition-bounded or subjected to the uses and customs of modern times. The texts, both in prose and verse, which support the argumentation come from the following aljamiado sources: the Biblical commentary Me‘am lo‘ez to Isaiah (Thessaloniki, 1892) written by  Yiŝḥac Yehudá Didiá‘ Aḅá, and three Sephardic newspapers also from Thessaloniki: two numbers of La Época (dated 1897 and 1900) and one of El Avenir, dated 1907.
