Abstract
This article looks at the adaptation and integration strategies used by Arab immigrants in Chile in the first half of the 20th century in response to the turcofobia and discrimination they experienced, in a context in which the paradigm of Orientalism predominated. The key elements of the process are presented, including the creation of different types of institutions, the discursive strategies used to turn the negative connotations associated with Arabs into positive ones, the multidimensional role of the press, political engagement with the freedom movements underway in their home countries and the building of a local Arab identity in permanent dialogue with other Arab migrant communities, especially in Argentina.
