Abstract

The converted Jew, Luis de Torres, who was the official interpreter in Columbus'first expedition, had also been Murcia Governor Juan Chacon's trujamán or secretary of Arab letters, with whom he took part in the conquest of Granada. Given that Torres was one of the thirty nine men, the discoverer left at Navidad Fort, he is also regarded as one founders of the first European inhabited place in America. The present Jewish historiography has approached this enigmatic figure in terms of considering him to be a guide and leader of the large group of converts enrolled in Columbus'great enterprise.
