Abstract
Explores the alternative interpretation of the novel which the Jew and Muslim communities might have made at the moment of publication of Abencerraje, by showing that there are key moments in the text when Narváez's superior morality, which sustains the narration for the mainstream readers, is destroyed. Taking into account New Historicism theories and some of Edward Said’s ideas in Orientalism, this paper deals with the hidden story of Abencerraje, which needs to be read as a subversive strategy forged by the anonymous author.
