Abstract

Offers a survey of the urban elites in Ilbura during the 3rd/9th century and the first half of the 4th/10th century, focusing on the ‘ulama’, as members of these elites. Special attention is paid to the social and ethnic origins of the ‘ulama’, thus showing that those belonging to Arab families controlled the world of Islamic knowledge during the period under study, in contrast to what has been observed in other Andalusi regions.
