Abstract

This paper examines the impact of Eduardo Malleas visit to India in 1956 on his own nanative, exploring his work of fiction and his testimonial writings. Mallea (1903-1982) was a writer of great gravitation in Argentinian culture between 1940 and 1960. lts narrative is resolutely urban and its personages cultivate a marked psychological profile, emphasizing the existentialist tone of its works. Collaborator of the well know magazine Sur, he was by more than twenty years Chief editor of the cultural supplement of the newspaper La Nación, exerting a certain literary tutelage during a time that saw to emerge new literary universes.

Catedrático de Literatura Hispanoamericana en la Université Clermont Auvergne -CNRS (IHRIM) de Francia. Doctor en Letras por la Universidad de París X-Nanterre; posdoctorado en la University of Maryland (LASC). Recientemente publicó: El llamado de Oriente, historia cultural del orientalismo argentino 1900-1950 (2015), Oriente al Sur, el orientalismo literario argentino de Esteban Echeverría a Roberto Arlt (2007), Georges Bataille: una teoría del exceso (1996, 2014). Es editor de Cantes de la Pampa (2015) de Manuel Ugarte, y del volumen Les Orients désorientés, déconstruire l'orientalisme (2013). Prepara la edición crítica francesa de Noli me tangere del filipino José Rizal.
