This paper describes the use of the Russian National Corpus (RNC) in teaching Russian. RNC is a relatively new electronic resource, consisting of a huge amount of Russian texts processed in the way that allows quite sophisticated queries. The paper discusses some possible uses, including teaching Russian to school and high school students. The use of the RNC makes it possible to easily get a vast number of examples illustrating relevant linguistic phenomena. Basing on these examples, a teacher may compile excersizes, and a student, write a ‘creative’ written task. The examples come from contemporary written and oral texts, providing exactly those data that the teachers of Russian most gravely miss.
