The following article analyzes the application of contrastive grammar as a learning and communication strategy. Referencing the corresponding rules and structures of the native tongue of the student that may either be equivalent or dissimilar to the language being used is considered to be a strategy that helps the student in the conscious process of constructing new knowledge based upon associations with previous knowledge. Reliance upon the knowledge of one’s mother tongue in order to resolve certain communicative problems should be considered a strategic resource, as it is well known that it is customary for the student to use this strategy to compensate when their knowledge of the foreign language is lacking or insufficient. Apart from that, the article presents a selection of Russian textbooks in which contrastive grammar is used as a strategy with the objective of facilitating the comprehension and acquisition of the grammatical structures being presented.
