Abstract

The fate of a creative generation of “Komi-Ziryanin” Kallistrat Zhakov (1866-1926) is complicated. He became known in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century; however, in Soviet times Zhakov’s works were either criticized or bluntly ignored. This article looks at Zhakov’s works in the intellectually-artistic context at the turn of the 20th century, the symbolism period. Symbolic themes and images (author’s marginality, “fairytale”, “sun theme”, “wandering”) play a role of the intertext, satisfying Zhakov’s artistic searches. The author’s legendary works intertwine, compiling a unified “text” and a rural sample of Russian symbolism.
