Abstract

This writing will pay attention to a relatively frequent category in the city of Rome inthe XVIII century: the cardinal ambassador. More precisely in two figures: Teodoro Trivulzio (1597- 1656) and Juan Everardo Nithard (1607-1681). They were two ecclesiastic princes who worked as ambassadors of the King of Spain to the Pope. In the following pages, their social origin and its influence on the development of their careers as men of State and Church will be contrasted. Special attention will be regarded to the public image of the activity of both. Their diplomatic performance will be studied, taking into account their ability for coping into the Spanish and Italian circles of power in Madrid and Rome. Finally, some of their milestones in their respective embassies of the Spanish Monarchy in the Apostolic See will be deeply analysed.
