Abstract

This article addresses the importance of martyrdom in the seventeenth century, and its great diffusion between the religious orders that evangelized in the East, as well as its influence on the Hispanic society. With the creation of the Cardinal Congregation of Propaganda Fide (1622), martyrdom appears as a compulsory condition in the activity of missionaries, in which one must be formed and has to be witnessed in letters, chronicles or narrations. Likewise, the propaganda of martyrdom made from Rome hides the demand for Catholic Monarchies to contribute more in the apostolic process of their territories. Finally, in this context, the persecutions in Japan offer numerous examples of the ordeal of the missionaries who recall early Christianity and show a heroism that infused fervor in the Catholic society of the time.
