Abstract

The reaction and renewal of the Catholic Church in the face of protestant trends, specified in the Council of Trent, are reflected in the progressive development of the adoration of the Virgen Mary. Proof of this can be seen in the enthusiasm generated around the defense of the Immaculate Conception. Belief in the Immaculate Conception was very widespread in Spain, and the city of Granada participated ardently in the worship of Mary, while at the same time a generalized devotion to the rosary manifested itself. The cofradías or brotherhoods played an essential role in the cult to Mary. In 1698, in the Royal Convent of Our Lady of Mercy of Granada, the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary of Our Lady of Triumph was founded. Its constitution, rules, a list of original members and the agreements established between the Brotherhood and the Convent are explained in this article.
