Abstract

Water usage during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era has once again become an important topic over the past decade. The author insists on the expression “once again” because early 19th century historians had also shown an interest in “matters of water”.

The author presents a selection of the historic bibliography on irrigation and hydraulic tecniques used in medieval and early modem Spain, as well as in its colonial territories up to 1800. The aim of this article is to indicate the status of research regarding water use in eache Spanish region to date. For this purpose, in the first part of the paper, biographical sources are chosen for the headings of General and Comparative Studies, Iberian Peninsula: General Studies and Levante (Valencia, Murcia and Cartagena).
