Abstract

The economic growth of the city and region of Guadalajara (Mexico) in the late 18th century confirms its regional originality. The reforms carried out under the new system of Intendances gave way to constant judicial confrontations between the viceroy and his intendants concerning competencies and authority. The forging of a regional awareness in Guadalajara was a consequence of its economic expansion, the administrative predominance of the city and the autonomy of its regional court. As a result, Guadalajara’s commercial function grew in importance, culminating in the creation of the Royal Consulate, which became an additional source of friction within the viceroyalty. This antagonism can be said to have manifested itself in practically all the areas of power.
