Abstract

This study looks at the methods of usage and existing documents regarding the irrigation of several farmsteads in the southeastern zone of the fertile plains or “Vega” of Granada, with especial emphasis on the rivers Dílar and Monachil. The parcelling of the Genii River in a document dating from the 12th century is completed and complemented by the partitioning of its tributaries.

The Dílar River supplies water to the area comprising the municipalities of Dílar, Otura, Gójar, Los Ogíjares, Alhendin, Gabia la Chica and El Marchai, Gabia la Grande and Hijar. The Monachil River irrigates the farmlands of La Zubia, Cájar, Monachil, Huétor Vega and El Zaidín. The information included in this text is based on Moorish documents which reflect medieval customs and practices. During this period, water and land were believed to be complementary elements.
