Abstract

One of the most fascinating aspects of the fiscal administration of the Antiguo Régimen is that related to the court-rooms of local revenue, whose public auctions provide valuable insight into the economic, social and legal conditions of the application of tariffs. Of particular interest is the fiscal court of Granada where, in 1614, the concession to tax the city’s wine and vinegar supplies was granted to the highest bidder. An incident taking place during this event led to a law-suit, brought against the municipal authorities by one of the bidders, who accused them of wrongdoing.
