Abstract

The attempts to repopulate the kingdom of Granada after the expulsion of the Moors are commonly believed to have resulted in failure, especially in the eastern part of the kingdom. Likewise, it is assumed that the demographic gap left by the expulsion was not filled until the 18th century. Studies focussing on the “official phase” of the repopulation process (1571-1595) tend to support this pessimistic view of the situation. In this article, however, an alternative hypothesis is suggested, according to which the process of repopulation —once the difficulties involved in its early (official) phase had been overcome— continued through the 17th century, aided by a migratory movement whose significance was previously unacknowledged.
