Abstract

The militias played an important role as a defensive force and as a reserve of the Ancient Régimen. Summerizing, we could say that there have existed two kinds of militias; the ones that were of service out of the locality where they were recruited (County militias) and the ones that served in their locality (Local militas, coast, urban and naval ones).

In this article, we will analyse the different kinds, characteristics, historical significance and basic differences between the military conventional system (army) and the militias one. We end this article analysing the advantages of the militias following the point of view of their fonds and their opponents.
